GhostWriter & the Muse

Common questions

If yours is not here, ask your ghostwriter. It knows how all of this works.

Before you buy

What does it cost?

$29.99 at launch, paid once. That covers GhostWriter & the Muse for as many books as you want to write, and every update. There is no subscription to us. Claude is a separate paid subscription from Anthropic, and you pay them directly. That is our launch price, and it will go up as GhostWriter grows. Whatever you paid, your copy is yours.

Can I try it before I am sure?

Yes. Buy it, and for three days there is a button on your setup page that cancels your copy and sends your $29.99 straight back to the card you paid with. No email to write, no questions asked. After three days the copy is yours, and there are no refunds. Your book stays on your own computer either way.

How do I pay, and is it safe?

On a secure checkout page run by Stripe, with a card or the other ways to pay it offers where you live. We never see or store your card number. Stripe handles the sale, adds any sales tax or VAT that applies where you live, and emails your receipt.

I have a code. Where do I use it?

In the guided setup, choose "I have a code". Some codes give you your copy outright, and others lower the price at the checkout.

What kinds of books is it for?

Books drawn from real life (memoir and life stories, family history, business and leadership books, how-to books) and novels. Tell your ghostwriter which kind you are writing in your first message, and the plan, the outline and the writing take that shape: an argument and its stories for a true book, scenes, characters and turning points for a novel.

Do I need to be technical?

No. If you can download a file and make a folder, you can set this up. After that, everything happens by talking with your ghostwriter in plain language.

Which Claude model should I use?

Opus, when your plan has it. We tested Claude's models on book work, and Opus was the most careful with an author's facts and words. It uses your Claude plan faster than Sonnet, so the choice is yours. Your ghostwriter works on either, and you can change at any time.

Writing with your ghostwriter

Does it write the book for me, or can I write it myself?

Either, and most people do both. Talk and let your ghostwriter draft, write a section or a whole chapter yourself and have it edit, or rewrite any paragraph on your book's pages. Your own words are always kept exactly as you leave them.

Will it sound like me?

That is the hardest part of any ghostwritten book, so it gets the most care. Your ghostwriter studies how you write or talk, drafts one section as a voice test, and learns from every change you make to it. It is built on purpose to keep to your voice. It checks its own drafts for the stock phrases that make writing sound like AI, and takes them out.

Will it make things up?

GhostWriter is built to flag anything it is not sure of. When a chapter needs a fact or story only you know, it marks the gap and asks you. Nothing goes into the book until you approve it. Like any writing assistant it can still be wrong with confidence, which is why you read every chapter before it stands (see our Terms, section 5).

Can I talk instead of typing?

Yes. If talking is easier, use Claude's microphone to tell your story. In the Claude app, press the microphone at the bottom of the message box, speak, and press it again when you are done; your words appear in the box, and you send them like any message. Say it as untidy as you like. Your ghostwriter keeps your words.

What do I say to my ghostwriter?

Anything, in plain words. If you are not sure, your Overview page always shows a few suggested prompts. Press Copy on one, paste it into your conversation, and add your own words.

How do I know when to move on?

You do not have to. Your ghostwriter leads: every reply ends with the next step and the words to say to start it, and it tells you as soon as a step has what it needs. If you would rather keep telling stories, keep going. Each one is saved for the part of the book it belongs to, and the book keeps moving while you do.

What if I get lost?

Ask "Where are we?" at any time. Your ghostwriter will tell you which step you are on, what is done, and the one thing to do next.

Your book's pages

Can I change things myself?

Yes. Every line on your book's pages has an Edit button, and so does every section of your chapters. Change your title, a story, or a paragraph right there. It is saved at once, and your ghostwriter carries the change through the whole book the next time you write.

Can it help with my cover?

Yes. Your book has a Cover page. Your ghostwriter designs a few covers from your own title and stories, writes prompts you can paste into a picture tool you already use, and gives you a place to bring in a cover made anywhere else. The one you choose sits at the top of your book's pages while you write. It is a cover to see and to choose. The file a printer needs is made at the end, by a designer or your bookstore's own cover tool.

Your book and your privacy

Where does my book live?

In the folder you made, on your own computer. The files are plain text you can open, copy, and back up like any other document. Claude processes your conversations inside your own Claude account. We do not receive your manuscript.

Is my book backed up?

In two ways. Your book keeps a dated copy of itself in your book folder on every day it changes, for the last 14 days you worked on it, plus one from the start of each month. Ask your ghostwriter to show you an earlier version or to go back to one. Nothing is brought back without your yes, and the version it replaces is kept. Those copies live on your computer, and your book is never stored with us, so keep your book folder somewhere that is backed up. A folder inside iCloud Drive works well, and so does any folder your computer already backs up.

What does reach your server?

Two small things, and neither holds a word of your book. When you start a conversation, Claude uses your private connection link to check that your copy is active and to fetch your ghostwriter's current instructions. And your book's pages load their design, the same for every book, from a public code library.

Setup and updates

How do I update to a new version?

GhostWriter checks for its latest instructions when you start a conversation, and your ghostwriter tells you in a line when something you will notice has changed. The version in use shows at the top of your book's pages. If the design of the pages has a change waiting, say "update my pages".

My ghostwriter says my pages have an update waiting.

Say "update my pages" in your conversation, and say yes if Claude asks whether to go ahead. Now and then we improve the design of your book's pages, and Claude sometimes waits for your word before it switches them over. Your book, your backups and your ghostwriter are already up to date either way. Only the look of the pages waits.

I changed computers, or lost my private connection link.

Open the setup link you saved when you got your copy. It brings back your download and your private connection link on any computer. If you got your copy with a code, the same code and email also work in the guided setup. If you have neither, use Re-download your plug-in on the Support page and we will send you your link. Treat the link like a password. Do not share it.
